Portland to Barwon Heads
The coastline of The Great Ocean Road has a lot of marvelous beaches
and views, bays, creeks and rivers and a number of rock-fishing spots.
There are numerous creeks and river, beaches and coves that produce
flathead, snapper, mullet and snapper from the rocks. Bream and mullet
are also present in Erskine River. At night in Queenscliff , squid
are taken and not very far away big salmon, snapper, whiting and sharks.
Although Portland is a commercial fishing center, its jetties are good
for amateurs to fish. Barracuota, snapper, yellowtail kingfish and tuna
are taken here in the summer. Port Fairy is another place in this part
of Australia which has good jetties to fish, as well as ramps, beach and
rock fishing. With the big white pointer shark roaming this part of the
water, Port Fairy is becoming popular every year.
At Barwon Heads, fishing is good during dry season but can be difficult
after a rainy day because of the muddy river. Salmon and mullets move in
to this part of the waters when the tide is high.
The road east will take you to Apollo bay where facilities to camp and
fish are good. The Barham River mouth is good for jetty and surf fishing
as it yields trevally, snapper and yellowtail fishking. Australian bass
can also be found in the barham river and also sea-run brown trout.
